Mitsui & Co. (8031) — moat facet
Mitsui has no customer worth naming; the companies that pay it are mostly the ones it owns stakes in.
Mitsui discloses no customer that accounts for 10% or more of its revenue. The only entity it names above that threshold is its own subsidiary: Mitsui & Co. Energy Trading Singapore had revenue of ¥1,986,458 million, excluding intra-group sales, more than 10% of the consolidated total1, about 14.2%2. That is a trading company selling energy to many buyers, not a customer.
The absence of a customer table reflects how Mitsui earns. Of its profit before tax of ¥1,087.1 billion in the latest year, ¥447.4 billion was its share of the profit of equity-method investees and ¥178.7 billion was dividend income34. In cash, it received ¥550.6 billion of dividends from those investments5. The companies that pay Mitsui are, in large part, its own investees.
Where there are end customers, they are spread across the world. Mitsui says 90% of its profit comes from outside Japan, with the Americas at 41%, Asia Pacific at 39% and Europe and other regions at 10%6. It has 278 consolidated subsidiaries and 168 equity-method investees7.
The concentration that matters is by commodity rather than by customer: iron ore produced about 31% of profit8, and its buyers are mostly Asian steel mills reached through the operators.
The measure is the share of profit from equity-method investees and dividends. At 57.6% of profit before tax9, Mitsui's customers are mostly the companies it owns part of.
The investee share of profit has been steady.
How much of Mitsui's profit comes through investees rather than customers.
