⚠ The Freight RecessionModerate threat
Mitsui & Co. (8031) — threat to the moat
America's freight slowdown has cut Mitsui's truck leasing profit by a third.
The truck leasing contribution fell from ¥28.4 billion to ¥18.8 billion in two years1. Leasing contracts are long, but rental and used-truck sales are not, and both fall when freight demand does.
A fleet of about 390,000 trucks2 is also a large capital commitment, financed partly with debt, whose value depends on used-truck prices when the vehicles are sold.
Mitsui has no control over American freight volumes and limited control over the business, which Penske runs.
The cycle shows up in the timing. The contribution peaked at ¥28.4 billion in the year to March 20243, when freight rates and used-truck prices were still elevated, and fell by about 30% the following year4. The latest year's smaller fall of about 5%5 suggests the decline is slowing.
The measure is the contribution. A third year of decline would say the freight slowdown has become structural.
