⚠ Energy Earns Less on More AssetsModerate threat

Mitsui & Co. (8031) — threat to the moat

Mitsui's energy segment has lost more than two-fifths of its profit in two years and earns under 4% on its assets.

The Energy segment earned ¥281.7 billion in the year to March 2024, ¥173.5 billion in 2025 and ¥164.2 billion in 202612. Its assets were ¥4,181.4 billion, a return of 3.9%34.

Energy net profit (¥ bn, years to March)281.72024173.52025164.22026Mitsui results, years to March 2025 and 2026
A 42% fall in two years.

That is the lowest return of Mitsui's three large segments, below Mineral & Metal Resources at 5.9% and Machinery & Infrastructure at about 5.1%5. Part of the fall came from impairments in Italian and Texan oil and gas in the year to March 2024, ¥23.6 billion and ¥12.3 billion6, and part from lower prices.

The segment is also where Mitsui is investing heavily, in Mozambique and in new LNG supply. A low return on a growing asset base is how a trading house can grow profit while shrinking its return on equity.

The segment's revenue of ¥3,230.7 billion7 makes it look larger than it is. Its core operating cash flow was ¥262.0 billion8, second to the resources segment, and its net investment outflow ¥207.2 billion9. The cash is still there; the accounting return is what has fallen.

The measure is the segment's return on assets after Mozambique starts. Below 4% would say the new capacity is not earning its cost of capital.
