Resource IndustriesNarrow moat

Caterpillar (CAT) — moat facet

Caterpillar's mining business earns less than its construction and power businesses, and the low-margin rail division it absorbed in 2026 pulls it lower still.

Resource Industries sells the largest machines Caterpillar makes, to mines and quarries. It had external sales of $12,185 million in 2025 on the annual report's basis1, about 18% of total sales and revenues2, and earned $1,988 million on total sales of $12,474 million3.

Rail dilutes a margin already falling.

What is inside: large mining trucks and off-highway trucks, electric rope shovels, draglines, hydraulic shovels, rotary drills, hard rock vehicles, large wheel loaders and large track-type tractors, plus articulated trucks and wheel tractor scrapers4. Increasingly it also sells autonomy and software: Caterpillar had 827 autonomous haul trucks in operation at the end of 20255, and it bought the mining software company RPMGlobal for approximately $733 million in February 20266.

The line changed shape on 1 January 2026, when Caterpillar moved the Rail division into it from Power & Energy. On the recast basis, Resource Industries had sales of $15,920 million and profit of $2,151 million in 20257, a margin of about 13.5% against 15.9% without Rail8. The recast figures are unaudited.

The history follows commodity prices. External sales were $7,504 million in 20179, $7,446 million in 202010, and $13,329 million in 202311, before easing to $12,100 million in 2024 and $12,185 million in 202512. The margin went from 20.7% in 2023 to 15.9% in 202513, as price realization turned from plus $1,422 million to minus $272 million1415.

It is paid largely through dealers for mining machines, and directly for locomotives16. Customers are miners whose budgets follow copper, gold and other metal prices.

Growth has returned. In the second quarter of 2026 the segment's sales rose 20% to $4,648 million, with mining, heavy construction and quarry sales up 22% and Rail up 15%17; its margin was 14.9%18.

Mining customers are starting to buy the whole system. In January 2026 management described an agreement, through Caterpillar's Brazilian dealer Sotreq, to provide Vale an autonomy solution for a mixed fleet of more than 90 trucks19. A mixed fleet means trucks from more than one maker, which is how Caterpillar's software reaches machines it did not build. Dealer sales to users in the segment rose 17% in the second quarter of 2026, and Rail's rose 272%20.

The segment's customers include quarries and heavy construction as well as mines. The industry line that includes them, mining, heavy construction and quarry and aggregates, had sales of $3,685 million in the second quarter of 2026, against $3,024 million a year earlier21.

The verdict turns on the margin. This line earns less than Caterpillar's other machine businesses, and Rail dilutes it further; a recast margin back above 17%, the 2024 level2223, would show mining pricing has recovered, while one stuck near 14% would mean Rail and competitors hold it down.
