⚠ Cat Financial Funds the NetworkLow threat
Caterpillar (CAT) — threat to the moat
Caterpillar lends to the dealers and customers it sells to, so a downturn in the network is also a credit event on its own balance sheet.
Part of the network's loyalty is bought with credit. Cat Financial provides retail and wholesale financing alternatives to customers and dealers1, so a slowdown that strains dealers and contractors lands on Caterpillar's own balance sheet.
The scale is large. Financial Products held $41,476 million of segment assets at the end of 20252, about 64% of the four reportable segments' assets3. Its borrowing accounts for about 75% of Caterpillar's consolidated debt4.
The funding is not free. Interest expense of Financial Products was $1,359 million in 2025, against $1,030 million in 20235, and the company warns that an increase in delinquencies, repossessions or net losses of Cat Financial customers could adversely affect its results6. The credit quality of those customers is covered on the Major Clients page.
The lender also needs access to markets. In August 2026 Caterpillar renewed its credit facilities, including a 364-day unsecured revolving facility of up to $3.5 billion7. Access to funding of that kind depends on credit quality, which is one reason the company guards its mid-A credit ratings8.
What to watch is the combination. Financial Products' assets growing faster than dealer sales to users would mean Caterpillar is lending the network into its sales, and a downturn would then arrive as a sales problem and a credit problem at once.
