Financial ProductsNarrow moat
Caterpillar (CAT) — moat facet
Cat Financial earns about $1 billion a year lending to Caterpillar's customers, and its $41 billion of assets is why Caterpillar's return on capital looks ordinary.
Financial Products is Caterpillar's lending business, mainly Cat Financial, and it is the line that most distorts the rest of the accounts. It had segment revenues of $4,220 million in 2025 and profit of $966 million1, about 6% of Caterpillar's total sales and revenues2. On the consolidated income statement, where revenue earned from Caterpillar's own businesses is eliminated, revenues of Financial Products were $3,609 million3.
What is inside is Cat Financial, Insurance Services and their subsidiaries4. Cat Financial provides retail and wholesale financing to customers and dealers, and financing for power generation facilities5. It has been financing Caterpillar products for over 40 years6.
It is paid like a bank: interest on loans and income on leases, against its own borrowing costs. Interest expense of Financial Products was $1,359 million in 2025, against $1,030 million in 20237.
The history is steady rather than cyclical. Segment revenues were $3,093 million in 20178, $3,044 million in 20209 and $3,785 million in 202310. Profit ranged from $505 million in 201811 to $966 million in 202512, a margin of 22.9% in 202513.
Its weight is in the balance sheet, not the income statement. Financial Products held $41,476 million of segment assets at the end of 202514, and its debt makes up about three-quarters of Caterpillar's consolidated borrowing15. That is why consolidated return on invested capital, 16.8% in 202516, understates the manufacturing business; Caterpillar's own OPACC measure sets the finance arm aside17.
Growth continues. Segment revenues rose 10% to $1,145 million in the second quarter of 2026, and profit rose 32% to $328 million18, on higher average earning assets19. Credit quality is discussed on the page about customers who borrow from Caterpillar.
The book has grown faster than the manufacturing business. Financial Products' segment assets were $41,476 million at the end of 2025, up from $36,925 million a year earlier20, an increase of about 12%21 in a year when total sales and revenues grew about 4%22. The segment's own capital expenditure was $1,341 million in 2025, more than Construction Industries' $358 million and Resource Industries' $626 million combined2324.
The segment's customer loans are long but not very long. The average original term of Cat Financial's customer finance receivables was about 51 months, with about 28 months remaining on average at the end of 202525. That lets the book reprice to higher funding costs within a few years, which is one reason its margins have held.
The line's verdict depends on credit, not growth. A segment margin that stays in the high teens or better through a downturn, as it did at 19.4% in 20202627, would confirm Cat Financial as a sound support for the moat; a year of losses would show it was the moat's hidden leverage.
Q2 2026 revenue +10%, profit +32%.
The lender's earnings; a year of losses in a downturn would show it as the moat's hidden leverage.
