⚠ Near the Bottom of Its Own Target RangeModerate threat
Caterpillar (CAT) — threat to the moat
In a year of mid-to-high teens sales growth, Caterpillar expects its margin to sit near the bottom of its own target range.
Caterpillar measures itself against a target band that rises with sales. Its Investor Day framework sets an adjusted operating profit margin target that moves from 15-19% at $60 billion of sales to 21-25% at $100 billion1. In 2025 it reported 17.2%, within the range2.
For 2026 management said the margin should exceed 2025 but "remain near the bottom of the target range"3, reflecting tariffs and growth investments. That is a modest expectation in a year when sales are now expected to grow in the mid-to-high teens4.
The target band itself concedes something: margins are expected to rise with volume, not with price. A company with unlimited pricing power would not need $100 billion of sales to reach a 21-25% margin.
The framework assumes profit follows volume. Caterpillar's deck says profit pull-through at the midpoint of the target range is about 31% from $42 billion to $72 billion of sales and from $72 billion to $100 billion5. That means each additional dollar of sales is expected to bring about 31 cents of operating profit, a statement about volume, not price.
The adjusted margin for 2026, reported in January, is the test. Near the bottom of the band despite a sales boom would say costs are rising as fast as prices.
