Caterpillar (CAT) — threat to the moat
Caterpillar's construction sales grew 35% in the June quarter while dealer sales to users grew 22%, and the difference sits on dealers' lots.
The second quarter of 2026 contained a gap worth remembering. Construction Industries' total sales were $8.346 billion, up 35%1, and its dealer inventory rose $400 million in the quarter2. Sales to users in the same segment rose 22% worldwide3.
Some of the gap is ordinary. Dealers destocked machines in 2024 and 20254 and are rebuilding, and the company expects Construction Industries' dealer inventory to be higher at the end of 2026 than a year earlier5. North American sales grew 50% in the quarter6, with the call describing very strong rental fleet loading7.
But rental fleet loading is itself dealer inventory in another form: machines bought by dealers to rent. If construction activity slows, dealers can stop buying for months while their customers carry on working.
The second half will reverse part of it. The company expects an unfavorable impact from changes in dealer inventories on Construction Industries' sales volume in the second half of 2026 compared with the second half of 20258. The restock that helped the first half is expected to hurt the second.
The fourth quarter will show whether the expected dealer inventory decrease of over $1.0 billion9 arrives as planned. A larger decrease, or a weaker sales-to-users figure, would mean 2026 borrowed from 2027.
