Power Generation: $4.0 Billion to $10.3 BillionWide moat
Caterpillar (CAT) — moat facet
Caterpillar sold $10.3 billion of power generation equipment in 2025, 2.6 times 2020, because data centres need electricity faster than grids can supply it.
Power generation is the part of Caterpillar that changed its story. Power & Energy's external sales to power generation customers were $3,963 million in 20201, $6,362 million in 2023 and $10,275 million in 20252, about 2.6 times the 2020 figure3. On the call for 2025, management said power generation sales exceeded $10 billion, "which is year-over-year growth of more than 30%"4.
The customers are data centres more than anything. The CEO said on the second-quarter 2026 call that the data centre market remains a primary driver for Power & Energy and that "no one is slowing down at the moment"5. Caterpillar sells them reciprocating generator sets for backup and, increasingly, for prime power, and gas turbines through Solar Turbines6.
The growth has accelerated rather than faded. Power generation sales were $3,098 million in the second quarter of 2026, up 29%7, and dealer sales to users of power generation equipment rose 72%, after 48%, 44%, 33% and 19% in the four prior quarters8.
This is not a new business for Caterpillar, which makes it credible. Power generation was $4,474 million of sales in 20199. What is new is that customers want the equipment faster than it can be built.
The growth rate has accelerated with each year. Power generation external sales rose from $6,362 million in 2023 to $7,756 million in 2024 and $10,275 million in 202510, about 22% and then about 32%11. Management's 2030 scorecard put power generation sales at 1.3 times the 2024 base in 202512.
Power generation reached about 15% of Caterpillar's total sales and revenues in 202513. Its growth rate is the number that carries the valuation: management's 2030 goal is to more than double power generation sales from 202414; a quarter in which power generation sales to users turn negative would be the first sign the data-centre wave has crested.
Q2 2026 power generation +29%; sales to users +72%.
The growth engine; sales to users turning negative would be the first sign the data-centre wave has crested.
