Price Added $5.6 Billion in 2023Wide moat

Caterpillar (CAT) — moat facet

In 2023 Caterpillar pushed $5.6 billion of price through its dealers and sold more machines anyway.

In 2023 Caterpillar raised prices by $5.6 billion, and customers paid. Price realization added $5,596 million to machinery, energy and transportation sales that year, against $1,978 million from higher volume1. Construction Industries contributed $2,678 million of it, Resource Industries $1,422 million and what was then Energy & Transportation $1,500 million2.

A large step up, a give-back, a return.

The profit followed. Operating profit as a percent of sales and revenues was 19.3 percent in 2023, compared with 13.3 percent in 20223, and Construction Industries earned $6,975 million on $27,418 million of sales, a 25.4% margin45. Profit reached $10,335 million, or $20.12 a share6.

That year is the strongest evidence of the moat's pricing side. A company without one could not have pushed $5.6 billion of price through independent dealers in a single year without losing volume, and Caterpillar's volume rose too.

It also sets a high bar. It is hard to know how much of that year reflected the moat and how much a market in which costs, and so prices, were rising everywhere. Price realization was $1,238 million in 20247, about a fifth of the 2023 figure8, and then turned negative.

The adjusted margin moved even more than the reported one. Adjusted operating profit margin was 20.5 percent in 2023, against 15.4 percent in 20229. The 2023 reported figure also absorbed an unfavourable impact of $586 million from the divestiture of the Longwall business10, so the price gains were larger than the headline margin suggests.

The 2023 figure should be read as a ceiling, not a trend. The next test of pricing power is whether Caterpillar can get the roughly 2 percent of price it guided for 202611 while costs are also rising; in the first half it realized $1,021 million12, which is on track.
