✦ Power Generation, More Than Tripled by 2030Narrow moat
Caterpillar (CAT) — the future bets
Caterpillar is betting that power generation sales will more than triple from 2024 to 2030, to above about $23 billion.
Caterpillar's largest future bet is that the power generation boom lasts long enough to fill the factories it is building. In January 2026 the plan was to double large engine capacity and more than double industrial gas turbine capacity, phased through the end of 20301. In April it raised the large reciprocating engine target to nearly three times 2024 levels, and projected power generation sales to more than triple by 2030 from a 2024 base2.
The base was $7,756 million of power generation sales in 20243. More than tripling it means above about $23 billion by 20304, compared with $10,275 million in 20255.
The bet is backed by orders. The report on the first-quarter call said Caterpillar's large engine backlog had grown more than 3.5 times since the capacity plans were first announced in January 2024, with customers signing frame agreements that stretch into 2028, and that management pointed to cancellation penalties and prepayments in those agreements6. Caterpillar expects a positive cash payback on the full engine investment by 20307.
It is also backed by quick fixes: the Wamego conversion and the 10-megawatt engine restart are discussed on the lead-times page.
The spending pattern is set out. Additional capital spending will run mostly from 2027 through 2029, with capital expenditures averaging 4% to 5% of machinery, energy and transportation sales through the decade8. At 2025's sales of about $64 billion excluding Financial Products9, that is roughly $2.6 billion to $3.2 billion a year10.
The risk is duration. Power generation sales of about $23 billion in 2030 require the data-centre build to continue at roughly today's pace for four more years. Power generation sales in 2027, the first year of the heavy spending, are the test: growth below 20% that year would put the tripling out of reach.
Capacity target raised to nearly 3x 2024; frame agreements into 2028.
The base for the tripling target; growth below 20% in 2027 would put it out of reach.
