Caterpillar (CAT) — threat to the moat
Caterpillar trades at about 34 times near-record earnings, a multiple it has only reached before when earnings were depressed.
Caterpillar's shares are priced as if the cycle has been repealed. At $805.25 on 24 September 2026, the company was worth $370.15 billion1, about 34 times trailing twelve-month profit of $10,844 million2. The trailing ratio quoted by stockanalysis was 34.70 and the forward ratio 28.013.
History says that is high for this business. At the end of each of 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, the shares traded between about 12 and 19 times that year's profit4. The only earlier years above 30 were 2017, when profit was depressed by restructuring and a US tax reform charge, and 2020, when the pandemic halved earnings5; in both, a high multiple sat on low earnings.
This time the multiple sits on near-record earnings. That is a bet that power generation will turn Caterpillar into a steadier growth company, and that the backlog protects it from the next downturn.
The shares have already shown how quickly that view can move: they traded between $459.58 and $1,073.46 in the past year6, and closed about 25% below the high7.
The multiple has moved much faster than the business. Year-end market value went from $175.14 billion in 2024 to $268.09 billion in 20258, while 2025 profit fell 18%910. Almost all of the rise in the share price since the end of 2024 has come from the market paying more for each dollar of earnings, not from more earnings.
The stock's volatility matches the cycle rather than the multiple. Its beta against the market was 1.59 in September 202611, which means its price has moved more than the market in both directions. A growth multiple on a stock that behaves like a cyclical is a combination that rarely lasts.
The multiple on trailing earnings is the number to watch. If earnings keep rising and the ratio falls back toward 20, the market will have been right about the growth; if earnings fall in the next downturn while the multiple holds, the price will have to do the adjusting.
The price of the power story; a falling multiple on rising earnings would vindicate it, a steady one on falling earnings would not.
