⚠ Inventory Is Soaking Up CashLow threat

Caterpillar (CAT) — threat to the moat

Caterpillar added $2.5 billion of inventory in six months to serve its backlog, and inventory is what a manufacturer is left holding when demand turns.

Growth is starting to cost cash. Inventories rose to $20,627 million at 30 June 2026 from $18,135 million six months earlier1, and the cash flow statement shows $2,553 million absorbed by inventory growth in the first half, against $1,639 million a year earlier2.

Up 14% in six months.

Some of it is paid for by customers: customer advances contributed $2,576 million of cash in the half3. And operating cash flow was still $6,241 million, against $4,411 million a year earlier4.

But the backlog, $72.1 billion5, requires more parts, more work in progress and more finished goods. If demand slows, that inventory has to be sold at whatever price the market allows.

Receivables grew too. Trade and other receivables rose from $10,920 million to $13,188 million in the first half of 20266, as sales grew 24% in the second quarter7. Growth of this speed usually absorbs cash before it returns it.

The ratio of inventory to sales is the thing to watch. Inventory rising faster than sales once the backlog stops growing would mean the build has overshot.
