Tokio Marine plans ¥400.0 billion of share buybacks in the current year, excluding a further buyback of up to ¥287.4 billion to offset the shares it sold to Berkshire Hathaway's National Indemnity12. In May 2026 it authorised a buyback of up to 130 million shares or ¥200 billion, running to December 20263.
Total distributions, dividends plus buybacks, were ¥652.4 billion in the year to March 2026 and are planned at ¥860.6 billion4, 3.2 times the ¥267.6 billion of the year to March 20185.
The company notes that as its share price rose, a larger buyback might be needed to offset the NICO sale fully6.
The buyback programme has grown with the equity sales. Buybacks were ¥150 billion in the year to March 2018, ¥50 billion a year around 2020, ¥220 billion in 2025, ¥240 billion in 2026 and ¥400 billion planned7.
The measure is distributions against IFRS adjusted net income. ¥860.6 billion is close to the ¥950.0 billion guided8, which leaves little for acquisitions without the equity sales.
