JCOM and the Communication BusinessThin moat

Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — moat facet

Sumitomo's half of JCOM earns steadily and its Ethiopian telecom loses most of it again.

The digital business Sumitomo split off in April 2026 became the Communication Services segment1. Its main asset is a 50% stake in JCOM, whose equity earnings were ¥34.0 billion in the year to March 2025 and ¥34.3 billion in 2026, with ¥36.5 billion forecast2. It also holds 45% of Jupiter Shop Channel, earning ¥7.5 billion3.

The segment's weakness is Ethiopia. Sumitomo holds 23.50% of Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia4, whose equity losses were ¥14.7 billion and ¥13.1 billion in the last two years5. The segment's profit fell from ¥25.8 billion to ¥16.0 billion6, and its return on invested capital from 5% to 3%7.

JCOM's earnings are steady. The Ethiopian venture is a bet on a new market, and it has so far consumed most of what JCOM earns for the segment.

The segment's revenue is tiny, ¥6.1 billion in the latest year8, because JCOM and the other main holdings are equity-accounted: Sumitomo records its share of their profit rather than their sales. The segment also sold T-Gaia for about ¥50 billion9.

The measure is the Ethiopian loss. The company did not forecast it for the current year10; a smaller loss would lift the segment toward JCOM's earnings.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Segment profit fell from ¥25.8 billion to ¥16.0 billion.
