Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — threat to the moat

Sumitomo's leasing expansion has pushed its debt ratio to its highest level in years.

Aircraft leasing borrows to buy aircraft and earns the spread between lease rents and interest. Sumitomo's own balance sheet has absorbed the purchase of its stake. Net interest-bearing liabilities rose from ¥2,672.5 billion at March 2025 to ¥3,147.2 billion at March 20261 and ¥3,713.5 billion at June 20262; the net debt-to-equity ratio went from 0.57 to 0.68 and then 0.7834.

Up two-tenths in fifteen months, with a plan to bring it back.

The Air Lease acquisition, about ¥330 billion5, was the largest part of ¥450.0 billion of investment in the first quarter alone6. The company expects the ratio to improve to about 0.6 times by the year end7.

Leasing's profit also moves with its own cost of money. SMFL's equity earnings fell from ¥80.1 billion to ¥51.6 billion in one year8, a reminder that the income from a large leasing book is not as steady as its contracts suggest.

Some of the debt is ring-fenced. Gross interest-bearing liabilities include ¥251.9 billion of project finance without recourse to the parent and ¥160.3 billion of financing for vehicle and construction-equipment rental9. The leasing partnership itself is equity-accounted, so most of its borrowing does not appear on Sumitomo's balance sheet at all; what does appear is the cost of buying the stakes.

The measure is the net debt-to-equity ratio at March 2027. Reaching the 0.6 the company expects would show the purchase absorbed; staying near 0.8 would show leverage becoming the new level.
