A Progressive Dividend and BuybacksNarrow moat
Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — moat facet
Sumitomo more than doubled its dividend in five years and has promised never to cut it.
Sumitomo's return policy is a total payout ratio of 40% or higher, with a progressive dividend that is maintained or increased each year1. The dividend per share rose from ¥70 in the year to March 2021 to ¥150 in the year to March 2026, before the four-for-one split2, and is forecast at ¥40 after it3: ¥37.5 on the new basis last year4.
It also buys back shares. It repurchased ¥70.0 billion in the year to March 2025 and ¥70.0 billion in the year to March 20265. In September 2026 it completed a buyback of 47,653,100 shares for ¥79,999,985,850, to be cancelled in April 20276. The total payout ratio was 41.6% in the latest year7.
The payout is lower than at some rivals, which reflects a company investing heavily. The progressive dividend is the promise that matters: it has risen every year since the year to March 20218.
Total dividends paid rose from ¥87.0 billion in the year to March 2021 to ¥180.0 billion in 2026, and are forecast at ¥191.0 billion9. The four-for-one split from July 202610 lowered the share price to about ¥1,77011.
The measure is the ¥40 dividend. Paying it on the current year's forecast profit keeps the dividend near 30% of profit1213.
The dividend rises again in the current year.
