⚠ The Middle East WarModerate threat
Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — threat to the moat
Sumitomo has set aside ¥30 billion for a war that has closed the Strait of Hormuz.
Sumitomo's results for the latest year open their outlook with the conflict: the global economy had been gradually recovering until the military conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran disrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz1. Its annual report lists the prolonged effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz among its risks2.
The company's forecast carries the effect in three places. It includes a ¥30.0 billion loss buffer3. Its automotive forecast of ¥34.0 billion is about half the latest year's ¥63.2 billion4. And revenue from the Middle East and Africa had already fallen from ¥485,892 million to ¥365,372 million5.
Some of its businesses are directly exposed: Toyota businesses in Iraq and Libya in the automotive segment6, and the energy trading business, whose European gas trade was already weak7.
At the first quarter management said the impact had been much less than originally anticipated8, and did not change the forecast9.
The forecast buffer is a management estimate rather than an identified loss. Before it, the forecast was ¥660.0 billion10. The company said at the first quarter that it would reassess the forecast at the half year11, and the buffer is the first figure that would move.
The number that tests this threat is Middle East and Africa revenue. A further fall would show the conflict reaching Sumitomo's customers; a recovery would let the buffer be released.
The region's revenue before the full conflict year; watch whether the buffer is used.
