The ¥100 Billion TargetNarrow moat
Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — moat facet
Sumitomo wants ¥100 billion a year from power, and is prepared to sell plants to get it.
Asked about the Energy Transformation segment after the first quarter, management said it aimed to maintain and further increase the segment's earnings at the ¥100 billion level, including capital gains1. The segment earned ¥102.4 billion in the latest year2 and is forecast at ¥115.0 billion3.
A target that includes capital gains is a target for the business model rather than for a set of assets. It commits the company to keep developing and selling projects.
The first quarter's ¥32.6 billion, including the Belgian offshore wind sale4, puts the segment on track.
Management also described the segment's contracted base: its forecast includes contributions from contract renewals in the power generation business in the United States5. Renewals at higher prices would support the target without asset sales.
The measure is the segment's profit each year. Staying above ¥100 billion for several years would show the develop-and-sell model working as a steady earner.
The forecast exceeds the target.
The first quarter toward a ¥115.0 billion forecast and a ¥100 billion floor.
