Sumitomo's April-June 2026 quarter showed steady growth underneath some large one-off items. Revenue rose 9.0% to ¥1,949,362 million and net profit 11.2% to ¥190,075 million1. Underlying profit rose to ¥177.0 billion from ¥137.0 billion2. Earnings per share, after the four-for-one split, were ¥39.95 against ¥35.293.

Three items moved the figures. The sale of the Madagascar nickel business produced a loss of about ¥73 billion and a tax effect of about ¥72 billion4, turning the income tax line into a benefit of ¥45.0 billion5. A currency gain of about ¥16 billion on reorganising an intermediate holding company lifted the corporate segment to ¥28.0 billion6. And costs of acquiring Sumisho Air Lease, about ¥8 billion, held back Transportation & Construction Systems7.

By segment, Mineral Resources earned ¥25.4 billion against ¥10.6 billion on copper and aluminium, Energy Transformation ¥32.6 billion against ¥24.0 billion, and Chemical Solutions ¥12.1 billion against ¥7.2 billion; Automotive fell to ¥11.7 billion from ¥39.7 billion, the prior year having included the gain on selling Midas8.

The company invested ¥450.0 billion in the quarter, mainly for Sumisho Air Lease, and net debt to equity rose to 0.789. It left the forecast unchanged at 29% progress10, noting that equity-method earnings are recognised mainly in the second and fourth quarters11.

Gross profit rose to ¥390.0 billion from ¥358.5 billion12, the clearest sign of growth in the operating businesses. Asset replacement and extraordinary items were ¥13.0 billion against ¥34.0 billion13, so the quarter relied less on one-off gains than the year before. Losses on securities of ¥26.3 billion14 were one of the items weighing on profit before tax, which fell to ¥152.3 billion from ¥210.3 billion15.

The measure for the year is the underlying profit forecast of ¥620.0 billion16. The first quarter's ¥177.0 billion17 is well ahead of a quarter of it.
