Selling What Does Not EarnNarrow moat
Sumitomo Corporation (8053) — moat facet
Sumitomo is selling a trillion yen of businesses to pay for the ones it is buying.
Sumitomo's plan for the three years to March 2027 raised the cash expected from asset sales from ¥0.8 trillion to ¥1.1 trillion1. Asset replacement brought in ¥240.0 billion in the year to March 2025 and ¥270.0 billion in 20262, and ¥90.0 billion in the first quarter of the current year3.
The sales include T-Gaia for about ¥50 billion, ARGO GRAPHICS by SCSK for about ¥19 billion, Midas, the melon business in Europe and the Americas, Sekal, domestic and overseas properties for about ¥80 billion, and cross-shareholdings of about ¥120 billion4. For the three years to March 2029 the company plans about ¥1.2 trillion of cash from asset replacement5.
The sales fund the large acquisitions without a matching rise in debt, and they remove low-return capital.
The measure is the cash from asset sales each year. Around ¥400 billion a year would put the next plan on track.
The target was raised and the pace is rising.
The sales that fund the investment programme.
