Sandisk (SNDK) — threat to the moat

Retail does not hold a shelf open. A brand starved of product for two years is not a brand that can be switched back on.

A brand that cannot get product does not stay a brand for long.

Consumer: revenue against volume, FY2026+29%Revenue growth+low 50s %Revenue per gigabyte-mid-teens %Exabytes shipped-5%Q4 revenue year on yearBars show magnitude; exabytes and the Q4 change are declines. Allocation, not demand.
The brand's revenue grew because prices rose. The volume behind it fell, and shelf space is not held in reserve.

Sandisk's consumer franchise is real, uncopiable by any other memory maker, and currently being run down. Consumer exabytes shipped fell by a mid-teens percentage in fiscal 2026, and the segment's revenue fell 5% year over year in the June quarter while every other part of the company multiplied.1 The reason is allocation: Datacenter revenue per gigabyte rose almost 150%, Consumer's by a low-fifties percentage, so the bits went to the datacenter.2

Retail does not hold a shelf open. A card that is not in stock is replaced with one that is, the substitute is frequently Samsung, and the shopper who has bought a competitor's card twice has stopped being a Sandisk customer. The damage compounds quietly and shows up years later, in a category where nobody is reading benchmark data and default choice is nearly the whole of the purchase decision.

The brand also has no leverage anywhere it is not being used. It is worth nothing in a hyperscaler qualification cycle and nothing in an OEM negotiation, which is where 85% of revenue now comes from.

The honest defence is that the decision is right on any near-term measure and reversible in principle. No stores have closed and no products have been discontinued.

Watch Consumer exabytes over four quarters, not revenue. Price is holding the revenue line up while the actual business shrinks, and the brand is only as strong as the last card somebody found in stock.
