⚠ The Brand Serves the Shrinking End MarketHigh threat
Sandisk (SNDK) — threat to the moat
The company reallocated supply away from the business its own name is on, because enterprise buyers were paying more per bit.
The brand's own end market is the one Sandisk is starving.
In the June 2026 quarter, Consumer revenue was $556 million, down 32% sequentially and 5% year over year — while Datacenter went from $213 million to $2,977 million and Edge from $1,103 million to $5,432 million.1 For the full year, Consumer grew 29% on price alone: exabytes shipped fell by a mid-teens percentage.2
This is a deliberate allocation decision, not a demand failure. Flash is fungible and supply is constrained, so every gigabyte sent to a retail memory card is a gigabyte not sold into an enterprise SSD at a much higher price per bit. Sandisk's own numbers make the arithmetic obvious: Datacenter revenue per gigabyte rose almost 150% in the year, Consumer's by a low-fifties percentage.3
The strategic cost is that a brand starved of product for long enough stops being a brand. Retail shelf space is not held in reserve; a card that is not available is replaced by one that is, and the replacement is often Samsung. Sandisk is spending an asset built over three decades to fund a cyclical opportunity, and the spending is invisible in a year when everything grows.
The defence is that the decision is correct on any near-term measure and reversible on paper. Nothing has been sold or closed.
Watch Consumer exabytes rather than Consumer revenue. Revenue is flattered by price; volume is the honest measure of whether the brand still has product to sell, and it is currently going backwards.
