Eleven Percent, Down From NineteenThin moat

Sandisk (SNDK) — moat facet

Sales incentives fell from 19% of gross revenue to 11% in the year prices doubled — the cleanest read on pricing power in the filings, and the first line that will turn.

Sales incentives and marketing programmes cost Sandisk 11% of gross revenue in fiscal 2026, against 19% in each of the two prior years.1

Sales incentives as a share of gross revenue (%)19%FY202419%FY202511%FY2026Price protection costs nothing while list prices rise. The clauses are still in the contracts.
Eight points of gross revenue, none of it earned — the cleanest read on pricing power in the filings, and it only moves one way from here.

This is the most direct read on pricing power available in the filings, and almost nobody looks at it. In line with industry practice, Sandisk gives distributors and retailers limited price protection when list prices fall, plus marketing reimbursements and other incentives, all recorded as reductions of gross revenue. The company says the amounts vary with industry conditions, list-pricing strategy, seasonal demand, competitor actions, channel mix and product availability.2

Nineteen percent to eleven percent is a collapse in what Sandisk had to give away, and it happened in the year prices doubled. When supply is short, the price protection clause costs nothing because list prices are not falling, and the incentives needed to move product through a channel evaporate. It is the channel's version of the same story the gross margin tells.

The corollary is the useful part. This line will go back up before revenue goes down, because it responds to the first sign of list-price weakness rather than to reported sales. It moved from 19% to 11% as the cycle turned; it will move the other way just as fast.

That makes it a genuine leading indicator, published annually and buried in a paragraph about revenue recognition.

Watch it in the next annual report. A return toward the high teens would say list prices are falling and the channel is being paid to absorb inventory — the earliest signal in the document that the cycle has turned.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Sales incentives fell from 19% of gross revenue to 11% — the channel needs far less inducement to move product. It is a cyclical improvement rather than a structural one, but it is real while it lasts.

11% in FY2026, from 19%

Price protection for reseller inventory when list prices fall, plus marketing reimbursements and other incentives, recorded as reductions of gross revenue. Eight points of improvement in the year prices doubled, and none of it earned: price protection costs nothing while list prices are rising, and a channel that cannot get product needs no inducement to stock it. This is a leading indicator published once a year. Watch for a return toward the high teens — it will move before revenue does.
