The Revenue LinesNarrow moat
IBM (IBM) — moat facet
IBM's four revenue lines split into one that earns most of the profit, one that carries most of the people, and one that swings with the mainframe.
IBM reports four segments, and they earn very different returns. In 2025 Software brought in $29,962 million, Consulting $21,055 million, Infrastructure $15,718 million and Financing $737 million, a total of $67,472 million1. Reported revenue was $67,535 million; the $63 million difference is divested businesses and other revenue23.
The chart in this app shows these four bands for 2022 to 2025, all on the "segment profit" basis IBM adopted in January 20244. The bands sum to total segment revenue, which was $909 million below reported revenue in 2022, $631 million in 2023, $243 million in 2024 and $63 million in 20255; the gap is businesses IBM has sold, above all the Weather Company assets divested in January 20246, and a small other line.
Older years are on other bases and are not spliced in. The segment profit measure replaced pre-tax income in 20247; the four-segment structure itself dates from January 2022; and before November 2021 IBM included the managed infrastructure business that became Kyndryl8. IBM restated revenue for that spin only for 2019 and 20209.
Profit is far more concentrated than revenue. Software was about 44% of segment revenue and about 61% of segment profit in 2025; Consulting about 31% and 15%; Infrastructure about 23% and 21%; Financing about 1% and 3%10.
Growth differs too. Software grew 10.6% in 2025, Infrastructure 12.1% on the mainframe launch11, Consulting about 1.8%12.
The quarter-by-quarter figures show the same division. In the second quarter of 2026 the four segments brought in $17,110 million and earned $4,092 million of segment profit13. Software supplied $2,502 million of that, about 61%1415; Infrastructure $835 million, Consulting $647 million and Financing $108 million16. For the first half, Software revenue was $14,813 million against $13,722 million, up about 8.0%1718, and Infrastructure was still up 1.9% despite the mainframe's fall19.
The lines describe a software company with a services arm and a cyclical hardware business. Software's share of segment profit, about 61% in 202520, is the gauge: if it rises, IBM is becoming more valuable per dollar of revenue; if it falls, the consulting and hardware lines are diluting it.
Software 44% of segment revenue, 61% of profit (2025).
All four lines together; growth below the 4-5% guidance for the year would mean the second half did not recover.
