◆ Inside the Latest Quarter (Q2 2026)
IBM (IBM) — the variant view
IBM's second quarter grew revenue 1% and software 5%, but a 42% fall in the mainframe forced the first guidance cut of the z17 cycle.
📈 IBM valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →IBM's second quarter of 2026, the three months to 30 June, grew revenue and still disappointed. Revenue was $17,162 million against $16,977 million, up about 1.1%12. Net income was $2,165 million and diluted earnings per share $2.27, against $2.313. On IBM's operating measure, earnings per share were $2.93, up 5%4.
The segments went in different directions. Software brought in $7,761 million, up about 5.1%56, with Hybrid Cloud up 11.2%, Data up 18.9% on Confluent and Transaction Processing down 8.1%7. Consulting was $5,327 million, flat8. Infrastructure fell about 7.4% to $3,835 million910, as IBM Z fell 42.0% and Distributed Infrastructure rose 37.3%11. Financing was $186 million12.
Margins held better than revenue. Total segment profit was $4,092 million against $4,003 million13; Software's margin was 32.2% and Consulting's 12.1%14. The gross margin fell to 57.7% from 58.8%1516.
Cash was steady. Free cash flow was $4.8 billion for the half, flat17, and software annual recurring revenue reached $24.6 billion18. But cash and securities fell to $8.2 billion after $10.5 billion of acquisitions19.
IBM cut its outlook. It now expects revenue growth of four to five percent at constant currency, below the "more than 5 percent" of January2021, and still expects free cash flow to rise by about $1 billion22. The dividend of $1.69 a quarter was maintained23.
The software categories explain the mix inside the quarter. Hybrid Cloud brought in $1,998 million against $1,796 million, Automation $1,951 million against $1,883 million and Data $1,782 million against $1,499 million, while Transaction Processing fell to $2,030 million from $2,208 million24. The fall in Transaction Processing, $178 million25, was almost exactly offset by the rise in Data, $283 million, much of it Confluent26. Operating cash flow in the quarter was $2.6 billion, up $0.9 billion27.
The quarter showed a franchise pausing, not breaking. The check is the third quarter, reported on 21 October 2026: if IBM Z is again down by more than 40% and the slipped deals do not appear, the pause is longer than IBM planned.
