⚠ The Cloud Bill That Did Not Come Back DownModerate threat
Text (TXT) — threat to the moat
Text finished a year-long migration, stopped paying twice, and its infrastructure costs still rose.
The clearest illustration of Text's cost problem is an event that was supposed to end it.
For more than a year Text ran two infrastructure estates at once while migrating to cloud servers operated by Google, and during that period a significant portion of the costs in this area was duplicated1. The migration completed in July 2025. Duplicated spending stopped.
Costs did not fall. Text states the completion of the process did not translate into cost reductions, for two reasons it gives in order: price increases in this area regardless of the provider, and its own decisions to expand the scope of purchased services and functionalities, which it expects to support future development and certifications2.
Half of that is a choice and half of it is a market. The choice is defensible — the expanded estate is what made SOC 2 attestation and enterprise-grade service possible3. The market half is not a choice at all, and it points the wrong way, because the next phase of Text's strategy involves running language models on behalf of customers.
Text is explicit that this may get worse: more intensive use of artificial intelligence may result in additional cost increases, and it is still difficult to determine to what extent those costs will be borne by customers and to what extent they will remain with Text4.
There was one encouraging datum. In the fourth quarter costs decreased against previous periods on optimisation of cloud use5, and the June quarter's operating margin held at 37,7%6.
Cost of goods sold as a share of revenue is where this lands, and it went from 24,2% to 32,4% in a single year7.
