⚠ The Department That Was ClosedHigh threat
Text (TXT) — threat to the moat
Text abolished its sales team and handed the job to customer support, in the year recurring revenue went backwards.
Companies restructure sales teams all the time. Very few abolish them.
Text's chief executive announced it plainly: one of the bold decisions ahead is the closure of the traditional sales department, with its responsibilities being assumed by the customer support team, supported by other teams across Text1. The logic is internally consistent. If the strategy is to turn customer service into a revenue-generating function — what Text calls Service on Offense2 — then the people already talking to customers are the natural sellers, and a separate department is duplicated effort.
The timing is what makes it a risk rather than a tidy-up. The decision lands in the same year that monthly recurring revenue fell 2,7% in dollars3, that the company began a Go-To-Market push behind a brand-new product it acknowledges will require marketing spend over a long period4, and that it flagged the erosion of the search channel that historically supplied its customers5.
There is also a quieter cost. A support organisation is measured on resolving things quickly; a sales organisation is measured on expanding accounts. Merging them means one group carries both incentives, and the enterprise customers Text is now chasing — the seven-figure retail contract, the SOC 2 attestation obtained to win exactly that kind of business6 — are the customers who most expect a named human on the other end.
If support-led selling works, new recurring revenue per quarter grows without a repricing behind it. That is the falsifier, and it has not been tested yet.
