⚠ A Cost Lead That Has Not Been Visible Since 2023Moderate threat
SK hynix (SKHY) — threat to the moat
A cost advantage only shows up when prices are bad, which means this one has not been tested since the last time it mattered.
The claim that SK hynix has a cost advantage is plausible and currently unverifiable, and the most recent evidence is not flattering.
The last period in which memory prices genuinely tested producer costs was 2023. SK hynix's revenue fell to ₩32.8 trillion, it posted an operating loss of ₩7.7 trillion and a net loss of ₩9.1 trillion1. Whatever its position on the cost curve, that position was not sufficient to keep it profitable when the price broke.
There are fair mitigations. Every producer lost money that year; the collapse was unusually severe; and the company has migrated nodes and improved mix substantially since.
But the analytical point stands. A cost advantage is a claim about relative position under stress, and the only stress test available produced a nine-figure loss in dollars. Everything since has been conducted in an environment where cost barely matters.
The next downturn is the experiment. Watch which of the three producers stays profitable longest, and by how much — that ordering is the cost curve, revealed.
