⚠ Repricing Is a Two-Way RightHigh threat
SK hynix (SKHY) — threat to the moat
The customer sits at the same table every quarter, and it is very much better at procurement than at anything else it does.
It is easy to describe quarterly repricing as SK hynix's advantage, because at present it is. The arrangement is symmetric and the counterparties are not small.
Every quarter, the same buyers that accepted an increase get to propose a decrease, and they are among the most sophisticated procurement organisations on earth, buying at a scale that justifies unlimited effort. When memory supply loosens, nothing in the arrangement slows the adjustment — there is no contracted volume to work through and no agreed price to expire1.
The 2023 outcome is the reference. Cost of sales exceeded revenue for the full year2, which is what happens when a price set monthly meets a cost base fixed in concrete.
What is different now is the composition of what is being priced. A commodity DRAM module is repriced against a spot reference; a customer-specific high-bandwidth memory stack qualified into one accelerator programme is not, because there is no reference and no alternative supplier mid-generation.
The thing to watch is therefore the proportion of revenue that is high-bandwidth memory rather than commodity DRAM. That ratio is the best available estimate of how much of the quarterly negotiation SK hynix actually controls.
