⚠ NAND Has Five Participants, and It ShowsModerate threat

SK hynix (SKHY) — threat to the moat

The same company runs a three-player business and a five-player one, and the gap between them is the clearest available price on oligopoly.

SK hynix runs a three-player business and a five-player one under the same management, with much of the same technology. It is the clearest natural experiment in memory.

Participants, by marketDRAMSamsung, SK hynix, Micron - and CXMT arrivingNANDSamsung, SK hynix, Kioxia, Micron, Sandisk2025 outcomeDRAM 77.1% of sales, NAND 21.3%China's condition on the dealSupport rivals entering Chinese eSSD, to 2026Both lists are SK hynix's own, from the prospectus.
Same management, same technology, two participant counts - and two sets of returns.

DRAM has three producers taking more than 90% of revenue1. NAND, on SK hynix's own list, has Samsung Electronics, Kioxia, Micron and Sandisk alongside it2. The difference in outcomes is not about execution. More participants means slower supply discipline, deeper price competition, and downturns that last longer, because coordinating five is harder than coordinating three.

The mix makes it visible: DRAM was 77.1% of 2025 sales against NAND's 21.3%3, and essentially the whole result came from the larger half. That reversed in the second quarter of 2026, when NAND revenue grew 364% and DRAM's 233%4.

Two things could improve the structure. Consolidation is live — SK hynix has just exited its Kioxia position entirely. And enterprise SSD for AI storage is the most differentiated corner of NAND, which is where the 321-layer products and Solidigm are aimed.

The falsifier is NAND revenue growing at a materially different rate from DRAM over a full cycle. So far the acquisition has bought scale in the worse industry, at a moment when the better one was about to become extraordinary.
