⚠ Fabs Arrive on Their Own ScheduleHigh threat
SK hynix (SKHY) — threat to the moat
Capacity ordered in a shortage arrives in a surplus, because everybody ordered it at once and for the same reason.
The uncomfortable property of semiconductor capacity is that it cannot be timed. A decision taken in 2024 produces wafers in 2027, and nothing about the intervening market changes that.
SK hynix has two large increments arriving: M15X ramping through 2026, and Yongin's first fab from early 20271. Both were committed when memory was scarce and pricing extraordinary. Both will produce regardless of what memory costs when they do.
The industry has run this experiment repeatedly and the result is consistent. Capacity ordered in a shortage arrives into a surplus, because every producer ordered simultaneously for the same reason. The 2023 collapse followed exactly this pattern.
One thing is genuinely different, and it is the demand driver rather than the contracts: AI infrastructure is growing faster than the consumer cycles behind every previous boom, and Gartner's forecast has DRAM revenue going from about US$143 billion in 2025 to US$401 billion in 20272.
The number to watch is not SK hynix's capacity but the sum of all three producers' planned bit growth against forecast demand. Individual discipline is irrelevant if the aggregate is wrong, and the aggregate is what sets the price.
