⚠ A Fortress Balance Sheet Built by the Price of MemoryModerate threat
SK hynix (SKHY) — threat to the moat
A balance sheet assembled by a price nobody controls is a windfall until it is spent on something durable.
The net cash position is real and the way it arrived deserves stating: it was manufactured by the best pricing environment memory has ever seen. Operating margin reached 76% in the second quarter of 20261. Equity more than doubled in six months, from ₩120,667 billion at the end of 2025 to ₩262,693 billion2.
A balance sheet repaired in those conditions has not demonstrated anything about the company's discipline; it has demonstrated something about the price of DRAM. The same firm had a materially weaker position two years earlier, having lost ₩9.1 trillion3, and the difference between those two states is almost entirely the market rather than management.
What the cash is for is behaving well in a trough — funding development, holding price, buying assets from distressed sellers. SK hynix has not yet had the opportunity to do any of that, because the trough has not arrived since the cash did.
What is encouraging is the stated intent to hold capital expenditure discipline while demand is this strong, which is the opposite of the industry's historical reflex.
Watch capital expenditure as a share of operating cash flow through the peak. A memory maker that spends everything it earns at the top has told you what the next cycle will look like.
