SK hynix (SKHY) — threat to the moat
Three years ago this company sold memory for less than it cost to make; the fabs, the engineers and the industry structure are the same ones.
A 76% operating margin1 is the most important number in SK hynix's results and the most misleading one, because the correct comparison is not to last quarter. It is to 2023.
In that year SK hynix produced revenue of ₩32.77 trillion, an operating loss of ₩7.73 trillion and a net loss of ₩9.11 trillion2. The same company, the same fabs, the same engineers, three years earlier. Memory prices had fallen, and in this industry falling prices do not compress margins gradually — they invert them, because the cost base is almost entirely fixed and a fab does not care what its output sells for.
The mechanism that produces the next one is already running. All three DRAM producers are adding capacity, for the same reason, at the same time, on the same forecast. SK hynix is ramping M15X through 2026 and opening Yongin's first fab in early 20273. Capacity ordered during a shortage arrives during a surplus; this is not a prediction so much as a description of every previous memory cycle.
One thing is genuinely different, and it is not the order book — there isn't one4. It is the balance sheet: ₩87,958 billion of cash against ₩18,587 billion of borrowings5, where a previous bust would have forced capital spending cuts at precisely the wrong moment.
The falsifier is operating margin. Not its level — its direction over four consecutive quarters. Memory margins have never once compressed gently.
A gross loss before a single won of research or overhead, producing a loss for the year of ₩9,138 billion — the same company, the same fabs, three years before a 76% operating margin. All three producers are now adding capacity at once. Watch operating margin's direction over four consecutive quarters; memory margins have never once compressed gently.
