⚠ Thirty-Three Times Earnings for a 7% ReturnModerate threat
RTX (RTX) — threat to the moat
RTX trades at about 33 times earnings while its return on capital is still below 8%, so the price assumes a recovery that has not finished.
RTX is priced as a growth company and earns like a utility on its capital. The shares closed at $189.40 on 25 September 2026, a market value of $255.27 billion1. That is about 33 times trailing net income of $7.74 billion23 and 25.7 times forward adjusted earnings4.
The market has re-rated the company. At the end of 2023 RTX was worth $120.99 billion5; it has more than doubled while revenue grew about 36%6. The price-to-sales ratio went from 1.76 to 2.7378.
The return on the capital behind the business has not caught up. Return on invested capital was 7.1% in 20259, below an assumed 8% cost of capital, because half of the balance sheet is goodwill and intangibles10.
The price assumes the gap closes: that Pratt & Whitney's margin climbs, the recall ends and defence budgets keep rising. Analysts' average target is $234.8211, and the consensus sees 2026 revenue of $96.15 billion12. If any of the three stalls, the multiple has little to fall back on.
The market treats RTX as a low-risk stock. Its beta is 0.29, and the dividend yield is 1.54% on a payout ratio of 51.41% of earnings13. A low beta says the shares have moved independently of the market, not that the price is safe; at 3.85 times book value14, investors are paying well above the balance sheet for a company whose return on that balance sheet is still catching up.
The adjusted figures narrow the gap but do not close it. On 2025 adjusted earnings of $6.29 a share15, the $189.40 price is about 30 times16, and on 2026 consensus of $7.24 about 26 times1718. Even the most generous measure prices RTX above what its return on capital would support if that return stayed where it is.
The shares have already fallen from a 52-week high of $226.88 to $189.4019, about 16.5%20. Return on invested capital in 2026 decides this; if it clears 8%, today's multiple is a fair price for a business finally earning its cost, and if it stays near 7% the multiple is paying for a promise.
What the market pays for the recovery; a fall toward 25 without a fall in earnings would mean confidence is fading.
