Collins: Content on Almost Every AircraftNarrow moat

RTX (RTX) — moat facet

Collins earns RTX's best margin from parts certified on almost every aircraft, but on the price paid to assemble it the return is still ordinary.

Collins is RTX's most profitable segment and the one least discussed. It earned $4,923 million in 2025 on sales of $30,196 million, a 16.3% margin1, against 7.9% at Pratt & Whitney and 11.5% at Raytheon2. It produced about 46% of RTX's segment operating profit with a third of segment sales3.

Sales up 43%, profit roughly doubled.

What it sells is breadth: power generation and distribution, environmental controls, flight controls, engine controls, nacelles, landing gear, wheels and brakes, cabin interiors, oxygen systems and avionics4. Once a part is certified on an aircraft it is hard to replace, and many of them wear out with use. That is where Collins's moat sits: in the certification and the aftermarket that follows it.

The margin has risen steadily, from 11.3% in 20215 to 16.3% in 20256, and aftermarket supplied $1.4 billion of 2025's $2.6 billion of organic growth7.

The limit is the price paid. Collins carries $32,776 million of goodwill8 and $71,680 million of segment assets9, so its pre-tax return on assets is about 6.9%10. The position is durable; the return on what was paid for it is ordinary.

Collins sells some of that content to the rest of RTX. Its inter-segment sales were $2,611 million in 202511, the largest of the three, which is why its segment sales of $30,196 million exceed its external sales of $27,585 million. Some of what Pratt & Whitney and Raytheon build contains Collins systems.

Collins is narrow and widening. The measure of this facet is its margin: 15.9% in the second quarter of 20261213, with management aiming toward 20%; a slide back to 14% would mean the gains were aftermarket cycle rather than business change.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Margin 11.3% (2021) to 16.3% (2025), aiming at 20%.
