⚠ Twenty-Nine Billion Dollars of Net DebtLow threat

RTX (RTX) — threat to the moat

RTX's net interest cost is about 19% of its operating profit, partly the legacy of a $10 billion buyback financed with debt.

RTX carries a lot of borrowed money for a company that is still earning its way up. Long-term debt was $37,700 million at the end of 20251, and net of cash its net debt was about $30,469 million, falling to about $29,078 million in June 20262. Net interest expense was $1,749 million in 20253, about 19% of operating profit4.

Coming down, slowly.

Part of the debt financed the $10 billion accelerated share repurchase of 2023 and 2024, which the filing links to "increased indebtedness"5. The buyback shrank the share count; the debt remains.

The balance sheet is sound. Debt fell from $41,078 million to $37,700 million in 20256, and the weighted interest rate is 4.5%7. But leverage reduces the margin for another recall or a defence contract loss.

The debt is expensive enough to matter to the equity. Total equity including non-controlling interests was $68,116 million in June 20268, so net debt of about $29 billion9 is a significant claim on the business ahead of shareholders, if a modest one against the $255 billion the market values it at10.

The ratio of interest to operating profit is the measure. At about 19% in 202511, a return above 25%, from falling profit or rising rates, would mean the debt is starting to shape decisions.
