Margin From 11.3% to 16.3% in Four YearsNarrow moat

RTX (RTX) — moat facet

Collins raised its operating margin from 11.3% to 16.3% in four years, and management is now aiming at 20%.

Collins's margin is the clearest improvement in RTX. On the three-segment basis the segment earned $2,380 million on $21,152 million of sales in 20211, 11.3%2. In 2025 it earned $4,923 million on $30,196 million3, 16.3%. Operating profit roughly doubled while sales rose 43%4.

Five points in four years.

Part of that is recovery from a weak 2021. Part of it is mix, as aftermarket grew faster than original equipment. And part is deliberate: Collins sold businesses it judged less profitable, including the Goodrich Hoist and Winch business in 2024, the actuation business in 2025 and Simmonds Precision Products in October 20255.

Management wants more. On the second-quarter 2026 call Calio described Collins as "consolidating operations, increasing hours at best cost locations, and attacking overhead layers" with margins heading toward 20%6. In the first half of 2026 the segment earned 16.5%78.

The improvement matters because Collins carries the largest share of RTX's goodwill, $32,776 million at the end of 20259. The margin is what has to justify the price paid to assemble it.

On an adjusted basis the margin reached 16.2% in 2025 and 16.7% in the second quarter of 20261011. The adjusted figures strip out restructuring and acquisition-related items, so they are the cleaner guide to the underlying improvement that management's 20% ambition builds on.

The same breadth that protects Collins's position makes the cost programme harder. A segment with as many product lines as Collins has a great deal of overhead to consolidate, which is the opportunity management describes, and a great deal of complexity to manage while doing it.

A five-point gain in four years is a real change in the business, not a cycle. The test is 2026: Collins guided to operating profit growth of $550 million to $625 million over 202512. A result below that range, with sales growing, would say the margin has stalled below the 20% ambition.

The margin programme's progress; a fall below 15% would mean the gains were cyclical.

How it's calculated: Collins operating profit ($2,613M) divided by segment sales ($15,812M) for the six months to 30 June 2026, from the Q2 2026 earnings release.
