Two Million Tonnes of ConcentrateNarrow moat
KGHM Polska Miedź (KGH) — moat facet
The fourteen-fold upgrade between mine and smelter, and where the silver credit is actually won.
Between the mine and the smelter sits the least discussed part of KGHM: the concentrator.
Ore at roughly 1,6% copper1 is not something a smelter can use. The Concentrator Division crushes, grinds and flotation-separates it into about two million tonnes a year of concentrate at 23% copper content2 — a fourteen-fold upgrade — and the tailings go to a facility that is itself one of the largest engineered structures in Poland.
This step is where recovery is won or lost. Every percentage point of copper and silver that reports to the tailings rather than the concentrate is metal that was mined, hoisted and paid for and will never be sold. On an orebody producing 570,9 thousand tonnes of copper and 1 323,3 tonnes of silver a year3, small recovery improvements are worth more than most capital projects.
It is also the step that ties the silver to the copper. The silver is recovered in the same flotation circuit, which is why the by-product credit costs nothing incremental and why it is so large.
The concentrator runs as an internal division rather than a subsidiary, so it publishes no separate result.
The measure is metal recovery, which KGHM discusses qualitatively. In the absence of a published series, the proxy is the gap between ore extracted and metal produced — and it is the reason the Sierra Gorda expansion is being justified partly on sustained or increased recovery4.
Concentrator throughput and recovery are steady; the Sierra Gorda expansion is justified partly on sustained or increased recovery, which is the same discipline applied in Chile.
Flat concentrate output means growth in refined copper has to come from bought material, at somebody else's price.
