KGHM Polska Miedź (KGH) — threat to the moat
Conversion earns a fee in tens of dollars against a copper price in the thousands.
Wire rod is a better business than cathode in the sense that it has customers. It is not a better business in the sense of margin.
Converting cathode to rod is a physical process with well-understood economics and many capable competitors, most of them independent fabricators buying cathode on the same terms as anybody else. The premium over the metal price is a conversion fee, measured in tens of dollars a tonne against a copper price in the thousands.
So the 279,9 thousand tonnes of rod KGHM produced in 20251 moved a modest amount of value, not a transformative one. The reason to do it is strategic — customer relationships, volume security, a claim on the electrification demand story — rather than a step-change in profitability.
The risk in leaning harder on it is that fabrication is a capital-hungry, low-return activity, and a mining company that funds it out of mining cash flow is converting a scarce asset into a common one. KGHM's strategy names revenue from more highly processed products as a target2, which is the right ambition and needs watching for exactly this reason.
Scale gives some idea of the ceiling. KGHM sold 290,3 thousand tonnes of wire rod and related products in 20253 out of total copper and copper product sales of 572,5 thousand tonnes4. Roughly half the output is already processed, so the remaining opportunity is to convert the other half at a fee, not to discover a new margin.
The measure is the margin, not the tonnage. If processed-product revenue rises without a rise in the group's EBITDA margin — 25% in 20255 — the value chain got longer without getting better.
