KGHM Polska Miedź (KGH) — moat facet
Nobody competes for a customer here - the contest is the cost curve, and KGHM sits in its expensive half.
Nobody competes with KGHM for a customer. Every producer sells identical metal at an identical published price, so the contest is over cost, over assets, and over the ground nobody has mined yet.
That makes the comparisons unusual. KGHM's rivals in copper are open pits it can never match on cost — its own Chilean joint venture among them, working ore at about a quarter of the Polish grade and making money at it because the ore is at the surface. Its rival in silver is a company that mines more of it and is therefore first where KGHM is second1. Its partner in Chile is a competitor everywhere else. And the fastest-growing source of copper supply is not a mine at all.
The four pages that follow are four different relationships rather than four versions of the same one, and only one of them is a fight.
What unites them is that none can be won by being better. A miner cannot take a customer, cannot raise a price, and cannot make a rival's ore deeper. Competitive position in this industry means one thing — where you sit on the global cost curve — and KGHM's C1 of 3,16 dollars a pound in 20252 puts it in the expensive half.
The one contest KGHM does win outright is for the rock itself. There is no second Lower Silesian deposit, and no one is permitting a new deep copper mine in the European Union. That is worth stating plainly because it is the reason to own the company at all: not that KGHM beats anyone, but that its position cannot be taken.
The measure across all four is the cost curve. If KGHM's cash cost after by-product credits rises toward the top decile of world copper production, the assets stop being strategic and start being marginal — and that is a question about depth and tax, not about any of these competitors.
Two of the four moved against KGHM in a year. The Sierra Gorda expansion shortens that mine's life by three years, and scrap is planned to supply about 180 thousand tonnes of Polish payable copper by 2030 - both pull supply forward or away from the Polish orebody.
Nobody takes a customer in this industry; competitive position is a place on the cost curve. KGHM's own filing shows its Polish mine producing copper at three times the cost of its Chilean pit, which is what 1 300 metres of depth costs. If the Polish cash cost rises toward the top decile of world production, the asset stops being strategic and starts being marginal.
