⚠ A Brand Board for an Engineering TransitionLow threat
Ferrari (RACE) — threat to the moat
A board chosen for brand judgment is the right one for selling scarcity and the wrong one for making a silent car desirable.
A board of luxury and technology executives is a statement about what Ferrari intends to be, and none of them are car people.
The chief executive of Saint Laurent, Delphine Arnault, an Apple executive: these are the right advisers for a company whose competitive set is positional goods rather than vehicles, and their presence is the clearest signal Ferrari has given about how it sees itself.
The risk is that a board selected for brand judgment is not selected to challenge engineering and product decisions, and Ferrari is entering the hardest product transition in its history. The electric target was cut from about 40% of the line-up to about 20% between one plan and the next.1 That is a large revision, and the useful question is whether it was caught early by a board that scrutinises product plans or accepted late from management.
There is a second concentration. John Elkann is executive chairman of Ferrari and chief executive of Exor, its largest shareholder — the ownership consequences of which are the subject of the second root threat. Here the point is narrower: the chairman's other role is running the holder whose interests the board is meant to weigh against everyone else's.
Watch for a director with deep automotive engineering experience. A brand board is the right board for a company selling scarcity, and the wrong one for a company that has to make a silent car desirable.

The company now expects electric models to represent about 20% of its line-up by 2030, materially below the roughly 40% it had previously indicated, with management attributing the revision to client demand. First deliveries of the elettrica are scheduled from late 2026. — October 2025 · publ. 2025-10-09 · source ↗
