⚠ Capital Spending Is Rising in a Company That Says It Needn'tLow threat

Ferrari (RACE) — threat to the moat

Capital spending is rising in a company whose entire valuation rests on not needing to spend.

Capital spending is rising and depreciation with it, in a company whose whole case is that it does not need to spend.

Rising capital spending and near-total distribution are being run at the same time, and the balance sheet absorbs the difference.

Ferrari's 2026 guidance names higher depreciation and amortisation in line with the start of production of new models as one of the factors shaping the year, alongside increased brand investments and racing and digital expenses.1 The e-Building, the new paint shop and a plan of four new model launches a year through 2030 all consume capital.23

That is not a problem in itself — Ferrari generates roughly €1.5 billion of industrial free cash flow a year against a capital programme far smaller.4 The risk is what it signals: a company that has begun spending to broaden its range, launch more often and add powertrains is a different company from one that made a handful of models very slowly.

The specific concern is the interaction with the controlled volume strategy. Four launches a year and 90,000 active clients by 2030 both point the same way, and the capital being deployed is what makes that direction possible.5

Watch industrial free cash flow as a share of revenue. Guidance of at least €1.55 billion on about €7.60 billion is roughly 20%, and any sustained fall would say the spending has outrun the pricing.
