⚠ Dividends Growing Faster Than EarningsLow threat
Procter & Gamble (PG) — threat to the moat
P&G raised its dividend about 4.5% in fiscal 2026 while its core earnings rose 1%.
The dividend is now growing faster than the earnings behind it. The fiscal 2026 dividend per share rose about 4.5%1, while core EPS rose 1% to $6.892. The share of reported earnings paid out rose from about 61.8% in fiscal 2025 to about 63.8% in fiscal 20263.
For fiscal 2027 P&G guides core EPS growth of 0% to 3%4 and about $10 billion of dividends5. If the dividend rises at its recent pace again, the payout ratio climbs again.
None of this threatens the streak soon. Adjusted free cash flow of $15,835 million6 covers the payment with room to spare. But the room is where buybacks come from; a rising dividend with flat earnings leaves less for them each year.
The gap is not new. The dividend per share rose from $3.8286 in fiscal 2024 to $4.0763 in fiscal 2025, about 6.5%78, while core EPS grew 4% that year9. Two consecutive years of the dividend outrunning core earnings is how a payout ratio climbs quietly.
The number to follow is the payout ratio. A move above 70% of reported earnings would mean the record is being kept by shrinking everything else P&G does with its cash.
