Seventy Consecutive Dividend IncreasesWide moat
Procter & Gamble (PG) — moat facet
P&G has raised its dividend every year since 1956, and its free cash flow still covers it about one and a half times.
P&G has raised its dividend for 70 consecutive years, since 1956, and has paid one for 136 years since its incorporation in 18901. It declared $4.2589 a share in fiscal 2026 against $4.0763 in fiscal 20252, an increase of about 4.5%3, and paid $10,232 million in cash to shareholders4.
The record is a product of the moat, not the moat itself. Only a business whose cash flow is this steady can promise a larger payment every year for seven decades; P&G's did through recessions, inflation and the loss of whole categories it sold. The split-adjusted dividend was $0.01 in 1956, $0.16 in 1986, $1.15 in 2006, $2.66 in 2016 and $4.26 in 20265, and the company reports a ten-year compound growth rate of 5%6.
The payment is well covered by cash. Adjusted free cash flow was $15,835 million in fiscal 20267, about 1.55 times the dividend8. The payout ratio against reported earnings was about 63.8%9. Including $5,028 million of share buybacks10, P&G returned more than $15 billion in fiscal 202611.
The dividend is also a promise about the future, and the latest quarter's declaration kept it: $1.0885 a share, payable 17 August 202612.
The streak grows by one every year. P&G's fiscal 2016 10-K described 126 consecutive years of dividends and 60 consecutive years of increases13; ten years later the figures are 136 and 7014. The annual dividend on the shares is now $4.36, a yield of 2.98%15.
The facet is wide and durable. What would change it is not a cut, which is very unlikely, but a slowdown: if the dividend keeps growing about 4.5% while core earnings grow 0% to 3% as guided for fiscal 202716, the payout ratio will rise every year. Dividends paid, $10,232 million in fiscal 202617, against adjusted free cash flow is the balance to watch.
Dividend per share +4.5% in FY2026; covered 1.55x by adjusted free cash flow.
The cost of the record against the cash that funds it; coverage below 1.2 times would strain the streak.
