Pricing Power, and Where It Ran OutNarrow moat

Procter & Gamble (PG) — moat facet

P&G's brands carried 4% price rises in fiscal 2024 and have managed 1% a year since, so growth has fallen to the pace of its categories.

P&G's pricing power is real, and fiscal 2026 showed where it stops. Organic sales grew 7% in fiscal 2022 and fiscal 2023, 4% in fiscal 2024, 2% in fiscal 2025 and 1% in fiscal 20261. Most of the earlier growth was price: 4% of it in fiscal 2024 alone2. Since then price has added 1% a year while volume stayed flat34.

Seven, seven, four, two, one.

The earlier years are the evidence for the moat. P&G raised prices through an inflationary period without losing volume, which only brands that shoppers will not easily leave can do. Retailers carried the increases because the leading detergent, nappy and razor are traffic they cannot do without.

The later years are the limit. Once costs stopped rising, the case for further increases weakened, and P&G's growth fell to the rate its categories grow. In fiscal 2026 gross margin fell 100 basis points to 50.2%, with pricing adding 40 basis points and mix costing 1205. The June 2026 quarter was flat on every sales driver6.

The company's guidance for fiscal 2027 is organic sales growth of 1% to 3%, including a 30 to 50 basis point headwind from discontinued brands and product forms7. P&G's long-term aim is core EPS growth of mid-to-high single digits8; its fiscal 2027 core EPS guidance is 0% to 3%9.

The slowdown shows most clearly in earnings measured without currency. Currency-neutral core EPS grew 16% in fiscal 2024, 4% in fiscal 2025 and nothing in fiscal 202610. Once exchange rates are stripped out, the fiscal 2026 business earned no more per share than the one before it, which is what happens when price, volume and mix all stop contributing at once.

The facet is narrow and narrowing. The falsifier is organic growth: if it stays at or below 2% for another two years while price contributes about 1%, P&G's pricing power will have become a matter of keeping pace with inflation rather than beating it. Organic sales growth of 1% in fiscal 202611 is the level to beat.
