PKO Bank Polski (PKO) — threat to the moat
Twenty-nine licensed banks and a fintech field means the price of a deposit is set by whoever is most desperate for one.
PKO is the biggest bank in the country and holds roughly 15% of sector assets, in a market with 29 banks operating1.
That single fact bounds everything on this page. A deposit franchise with 15% share is a leading position, not a controlling one, and it means PKO sets its deposit rates with reference to what everyone else is offering rather than to what it would like to pay. Five other institutions are large enough to matter, and any of them can buy deposits by paying up for a quarter.
Fragmentation also means the sector consolidates in ways PKO does not control. In January 2026 Erste Group acquired a 49% controlling stake in Santander Bank Polska, and in April the bank was renamed Erste Bank Polska2 — the third-largest bank in the country changed owner without PKO being party to it.
Share moves slowly in retail banking, and that is the defence. Customers do not switch, so the distribution of accounts today largely determines the distribution in five years.
Nothing in the numbers suggests erosion: deposits grew 12,9% in the first half of 20263 and customer numbers reached 12,6 million.
The measure is PKO's share of sector deposits rather than its absolute growth. Growing at the market rate is holding position; growing below it, in a market where nobody switches, is losing a franchise slowly enough not to notice.
