⚠ A Third of Poland Is Also a CeilingModerate threat
PKO Bank Polski (PKO) — threat to the moat
A bank that already has a third of the country grows only as fast as the country does.
PKO serves about one Pole in three1. The arithmetic of the remaining two is not encouraging.
Poland's population is roughly 37 million and falling; the addressable banked population is smaller still, and most of it already banks somewhere. So PKO's 300 thousand net new customers a year2 are, largely, customers taken from other banks or young people opening a first account — and in a market where nobody switches, both are slow.
That makes the growth in this business a wallet-share story rather than a customer-count story, which is the same structural position Allegro occupies in Polish e-commerce and Dino in Polish groceries. The country is the constraint.
PKO's answer is to sell more to the people it has, which is what the Allegro partnership and Automarket are for3, and what a mobile application with 8,7 million installations makes cheap4.
Nothing here is deteriorating. Customers rose every year from 11 120 to 12 460 thousand5.
Watch products per customer rather than customers, and note that PKO does not disclose it. In a market this saturated it is the only measure of growth that can compound, and its absence from the reporting is the gap worth pressing on.
