GPW (GPW) — threat to the moat

A monopoly on a pond, not an ocean — the size of the moat isn't the size of the prize.

The defining limitation on GPW's otherwise excellent franchise is the size and vitality of the market it monopolizes. The Polish equity market is small by international standards — a fraction of the capitalization of the large Western European exchanges, let alone the American ones — and it has struggled to grow. New listings have been scarce for years, the pipeline of large domestic IPOs is thin, and companies have been leaving the public market for private hands faster than new ones arrive. A monopoly is only as valuable as the traffic it can toll, and GPW's traffic is constrained by a listed universe that is not expanding.

The pond shrank by 33 companies in five years before the first uptick.

This is the crux of the bull-bear debate and the reason a wide-moat monopoly trades so cheaply. The moat is real and durable; the market inside it is small and slow. Growth must therefore come from somewhere other than a rising tide of domestic listings — from the energy exchange, from data and new products, from higher trading intensity, or from a genuine revival of Polish capital markets that has been promised more often than delivered. An investor has to decide whether GPW is a cash cow slowly grazing a shrinking field, or a monopoly poised to grow the traffic across its booths once Poland's markets deepen. The moat does not settle that question; the size of the pond is the whole argument — even the record 2025 harvest was 551,9m zł1.
