⚠ Cross-Border Exchange Deals Rarely HappenModerate threat
GPW (GPW) — threat to the moat
National pride and politics have blocked nearly every regional exchange merger ever proposed.
Exchanges are treated as national assets, and cross-border consolidation in Europe has repeatedly been blocked or unwound by governments and regulators. GPW's own route shows the pattern: its one completed foreign acquisition is in Armenia, outside the EU, where the Armenia Securities Exchange brought in 32,5 million złoty in 20251.
A deal with an EU neighbour would face sovereignty concerns on both sides, and GPW's owner is the Polish state, which holds 51,80% of the votes2. A state-controlled exchange buying another country's exchange is a political event before it is a commercial one.
The shares now trade at about 19 times earnings3. Nothing in that price needs a regional deal, which is as it should be. Watch for a signed agreement with an EU exchange; until then the regional story is Armenia.
